The Boerboel

A Guardian by Nature
The Boerboel (pronounced boo-r-bull) is a powerful South African breed developed to guard the farmstead and protect the family. Known for its strength, confidence, intelligence, and unwavering loyalty, the Boerboel combines an imposing presence with a deep devotion to those it calls its own.
ROOTED IN SOUTH AFRICA
The name Boerboel comes from Afrikaans, reflecting the breed's roots as the South African farmer's dog. For generations, these dogs were valued as capable working companions and dependable guardians of the homestead.

History and Heritage
The Boerboel’s story is deeply rooted in South Africa. When European settlers arrived at the Cape beginning in the 1600s, they brought large, powerful dogs with them. Over generations, these dogs developed alongside local dogs and other working breeds, shaped by the demanding conditions of the South African farmstead.
Strength, agility, intelligence, and the ability to protect both family and property were essential. Organized efforts to preserve and standardize the Boerboel began in South Africa in 1983, helping establish the foundation for formal breed standards and registration. The breed received full American Kennel Club (AKC) recognition in 2015.

Temperament and Personality
Confident by Nature. Devoted by Heart.
CONFIDENT & STEADY
Self-assured and composed, the Boerboel should display a confident, balanced nature. Its strength is matched by steadiness and discernment.
DEVOTED TO FAMILY
Deeply loyal to its family, the Boerboel forms strong bonds with those it knows and is naturally attentive to the people in its care.
NATURAL GUARDIAN
Protective instinct is fundamental to the breed. Boerboels are alert and discerning, assessing their surroundings with confidence rather than reacting without reason.
INTELLIGENT & TRAINABLE
Intelligent and capable, the Boerboel requires consistent training, clear leadership, and early socialization to develop into a well-balanced adult.

Care & Well-Being
Exercise: Despite their substantial size, Boerboels are athletic, capable working dogs. Regular exercise and mental stimulation are important for maintaining their physical condition and overall well-being. Secure areas for exercise and purposeful activity are especially valuable.
Grooming: The Boerboel’s short, dense coat is relatively low-maintenance. Regular brushing helps remove loose hair and keep the coat in good condition, while bathing can be done as needed. Routine nail, ear, and dental care should also be part of their overall care.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
Like all breeds, Boerboels may be affected by certain health conditions. Responsible breeding programs use appropriate health screening to help make informed breeding decisions.
• Hips & Elbows: Screening for hip and elbow dysplasia
• Cardiac Health: Evaluation of heart function
• Eye & Eyelid Health: Monitoring for conditions affecting the eyes and eyelids
• Bloat (GDV): Owners should be familiar with the signs of this potentially life-threatening emergency
A Breed That Requires Commitment
The Boerboel’s strength, intelligence, confidence, and protective instincts require responsible ownership. Early socialization, consistent training, clear leadership, and an understanding of guardian breeds are essential in helping a Boerboel develop into a well-balanced adult.
